A lot of criticisms have been leveled by Nigerians, on the Nigeria Police Force over the years, with some even questioning their usefulness to the nation. But still, there exists the hope and possibility of developing a police force to the standard of the likes of the United States and Europe. When one hears these words: “anything for the boys”, even a blind man would be able to tell whose mouths these words came from. It’s no longer a big deal listening to narratives of the exploits of the “Men in Black”(Nigeria Police Force), who given the slightest opportunity would be glad (under the guise of ‘stop & search’) to lay their hands on as many 20 naira notes as possible. They don’t even do it discreetly anymore!

Nigeria jagaga, so did Idris sing and he is right. A land of injustice, lack of fair play and equity, where the end justifies the means and things have fallen apart.

Currently, there has been much hype about Nigeria’s 50 years of nationhood by both the media and the public in form of celebratory programmes and promotions.

The three tiers of government are not left out of the hullabaloo. It has been christened “Nigeria’s golden jubilee” and everybody is busy trying to concoct one phoney proposal or the other towards this mundane celebration.

Some may wonder where this may be on this earth. Please do not be troubled because by the time you get to the end of this article, you will find yourself in the midst of it. However, I want to set out with the description of a charlatan. A charlatan is a pretender and always second rate. His or her reasoning is equally misleading. Often, he speaks with a borrowed voice and acts with false strength.

Nigeria is among the nations that breathed the air of freedom in October 1st 1960 from the colonial masters. Nigeria’s independence was greeted with mixed feelings by the stakeholders themselves. Some sections of the country were so afraid of being marginalized by others in the sharing of the national cake.

Samuel P. Huntington in his bestseller book “The Clash of Civilizations and remaking of the world” which first came out as an article in the journal Foreign Affairs in 1993 enumerated the new era in the world politics, he explained why nations like Russia abandoned the salute for Lenin Statue of the old USSR for the new nation Flag, why Mexicans demonstrated for a favorable immigration policy inside America with total display of Mexican flags on American soil. He looked into the Muslims mentality of almost self-destruction in the name of getting to Heaven.

The downstream effects of youth unemployment are fuelling rapid alienation and social unrest across the Nigerian landscape, the immediate symptoms of which are evident in the palpable rise in organised crime, armed insurgency, vandalism and drug trafficking.

The over 2000-year-old ancient chinese text; The Art of War is indeed a phenomenal classic. Personally for me as an individual and a student of strategy, it is certainly one of the most influential materials on the theory and practice of strategy that I have ever come across. To date, still after over ten years of coming into contact with a copy of the text, new paradigms of thoughts and interpretations emerge each time I ponder over some of its teachings. The depth and relevance of its teachings are so thorough, timeless and awe-inspiring that sometimes I wonder who really was Sun Tzu? For now, that is still a question unanswered.
